Throughout our lives, we make hundreds of thousands of facial expressions. These expressions occur when our facial muscles contract and can result in lines and wrinkles. Botox can help to temporarily smooth forehead lines, lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet for a more youthful appearance.

What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator made up of botulinum toxin type A. It works by blocking the nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract. This relaxes the muscles, temporarily smoothing lines and wrinkles. Botox can also be used to balance facial asymmetry and relax neck bands.

What to Expect During Treatment

Botox injections are done in-office and on an outpatient basis. While anesthetic is not commonly needed, a topical numbing solution can be applied prior to treatment on request. A very short and thin needle will be used to inject the Botox into the targeted areas, causing virtually no pain. The number of injections needed will differ depending on your desired result. Treatment is very quick, only lasting about 10 minutes.

Results

There is no downtime associated with Botox injections, so you can be on your way right after treatment! Following Botox injections, temporary swelling, bruising, and redness may occur. Results can take up to two weeks to become apparent. A Botox injection usually lasts 3-4 months and can be repeated as necessary when wrinkles reappear.
