As we age, our face can lose volume and skin can begin to sag, causing a tired, sad, or grumpy appearance. A facelift is the gold standard of facial rejuvenation, able to help patients achieve a more youthful facial appearance.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift procedure can treat facial wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin due to aging. A facelift focuses on addressing relaxed, sagging skin, deep folds around the nose and mouth, hollow looking areas, jowls, and excess fat on the neck. A facelift is often a long-lasting solution to improve many areas of the face with just one surgery.

How is it Performed?

A facelift procedure is done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. There are a variety of facelift techniques that can be used. These include the traditional facelift, a limited incision facelift, and a neck lift. During a traditional facelift, an incision will be created along the hairline from the temples, around the ear to the lower scalp. Fat and tissue will then be redistributed and repositioned, skin is re-draped, and excess skin removed. The limited incision facelift entails a shorter incision be created at the temples and around the ear. This surgery option is often used in patients with minimal to mild signs of aging. A necklift may also be performed to address sagging, loose neck skin and fat. A necklift incision is created in front of the ear and wraps around behind the ear. An incision is also made under the chin. Dr. Golosow will place all incisions as inconspicuously as possible where they will fit the natural folds of the skin.

Following a facelift, you may be placed in compression wraps or bandages, and you should wear them as directed. It is recommended that patients recline with their head elevated above their heart rather than lie flat to minimize swelling. Any discomfort that occurs can be controlled with pain medication, and should begin to decrease 48 hours after surgery. Swelling and bruising may occur. It is important to follow all post-op instructions given to you by Dr. Golosow for a quick recovery.
