What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts by using implants. A woman might decide to have a breast augmentation to enhance her appearance in clothing, to correct loss of breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss, or to make her breasts more symmetrical. Breast augmentation surgery can increase a woman’s bust line by one or more cup sizes.
How is it performed?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under anesthesia. The operation usually takes between one and two hours to perform. The surgical incision can be located on the inframammary fold, around the areola, or in the armpit. Through the incision, a pocket is made to accommodate the implant. The implant can be placed above or below the chest muscle, depending on a patient’s anatomy or desires.
What type of implants are used?
Most breast augmentation surgeries are performed with saline implants. Silicone implants are available to women who qualify to participate in FDA approved studies. Implants come in various sizes and shapes (round or teardrop). They can have smooth or textured shells. The type of implant to be used will depend on a patient’s anatomy and preference.
Recovery
Most women are able to return to work a few days after breast augmentation surgery. Heavy lifting and upper body exercise is not recommended for at least a month. Woman may feel tired or sore for a few days after breast augmentation but this quickly resolves. Each patient’s progress is closely monitored by Dr. Golosow and her staff.
