Women with different-sized breasts may feel self-conscious about their appearance and have difficulty buying clothing that fits their disproportionate chests. Unilateral breast reduction is performed to correct breast asymmetry and create more symmetrical, evenly shaped breasts.
What is a Unilateral Breast Reduction?
Some women have unevenly sized breasts that create a disproportionate look and make it incredibly difficult to find bras and clothing that fit well. Unilateral breast reduction reduces the size of the larger breast to match the smaller one, creating an even, symmetrical pair of breasts.
This procedure is performed by removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue to create a smaller breast. The most common incision used for breast reduction from Dr. Golosow is an anchor incision made around the areola, extending vertically to the bottom of the breast and horizontally along the breast fold. Liposuction can also be used to remove excess fat from the side of the breast.
Differences Between a Breast Reduction and Unilateral Breast Reduction
The main difference is that a breast reduction is performed on both breasts while a unilateral breast reduction procedure is only performed on a single breast. The treated breast will be reduced to match the size of the other breast and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to sit symmetrically with the nipple of the contralateral breast.
Results & Recovery
After surgery, your incisions will be stitched and covered with bandages. Moderate pain or discomfort is common during the first week but is often well-managed with prescription and over-the-counter pain medication. Patients can resume all normal activities after 6-8 weeks. The results are a symmetrical pair of breasts and improved breast aesthetics.
Who is a Candidate for Unilateral Breast Reduction?
Women with asymmetrical breasts (breasts of two different sizes) can benefit from unilateral breast reduction. If you feel self-conscious about the varying sizes of your breasts, this procedure will address your concerns and help you feel more comfortable with your appearance. The best way to determine if you are a candidate is to schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Golosow. She will assess your condition and medical history to determine if you are a good candidate.
